John Wilkes Booth shot dead President Abraham Lincoln at the Ford Theatre On Good Friday, April 14, 1865 while america's greatest president was watching the play "Our American Cousin" with a single shot derringer pistol.

There were at least two attempts on President Lincoln before he was shot dead by John Wilkes Booth. He was shot twice but missed. In august 1864, a sniper shot Abraham Lincoln when he was riding on his horse to the soldier's home. President Lincoln escaped the assassination attempt without any injuries.

President Lincoln was shot a second time and the incident was confirmed by Private John W. Nichols of Company K who was on guard duty at the large gate on the edge of the institution grounds when he heard a rifle shot and then witnessed the "bareheaded" president Lincoln riding quickly on horseback towards his cottage. Private Nichols asked president Lincoln about his missing hat and was told that "somebody had shot Lincoln" which frightened Lincoln's horse and then led to a struggle to regain control that had "jerked Lincoln's hat off." Concerned, Nichols recalled years later that he and another member of the company went down the twisting driveway toward the main road where they discovered the president Lincoln's signature silk plug hat with a bullet hole through the crown. Whoever fired the shot remains a mystery to this day.

Accompanying President Lincoln at Ford's Theater that night were his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, a twenty-eight year-old officer named Major Henry R. Rathbone, and Rathbone's fiancee, Clara Harris. When the play was in progress, John Wilkes Booth with a drawn derringer pistol stepped into the presidential box, aimed and shot Lincoln. President Lincoln slumped forward dead.

John Wilkes Booth, after he shot Lincoln dropped the pistol and waved a hunting knife and slashed Rathbone in the arm and leaped from the balcony. Booth shattered a bone in his leg and injured rushed out the back door. The assasinator who shot Lincoln disappeared in the night on horse back.

A doctor in the audience immediately went upstairs to the box. The bullet shot had entered through Lincoln's left ear and lodged behind his right eye. He was paralyzed and barely breathing. After President Abraham Lincoln was shot he was carried across Tenth Street, to a boarding-house opposite the theater, but the doctors' best efforts failed. Nine hours later, at 7:22 AM on April 15th, Lincoln expired.

John Wilkes Booth who shot Lincoln was born on May 10, 1838. John Wilkes Booth was an actor who performed throughout the country in many plays. He was the lead in some of William Shakespeare's most famous works. Additionally, Booth was a racist and Southern sympathizer during the Civil War. He hated Abraham Lincoln who represented everything Booth was against and Booth blamed Lincoln for all the South's ills. He wanted revenge and that became the reason why Booth Shot Lincoln.

On the day President Lincoln was shot co-conspirator Lewis Powell (or Paine/Payne) attempted to assassinate Secretary of State William Seward, but only managed to injure him. David Herold accompanied Powell. However, Herold fled before the deed was finished. At the same time, George Atzerodt was supposed to have killed Vice-President Andrew Johnson. Atzerodt did not go through with the assassination.

After Booth shot dead Lioncoln, he escaped the Capital and traveled to Mary Surratt's Tavern in Maryland where they picked up supplies. They then traveled to Dr. Samuel Mudd's house where Booth's injured leg was set.

On April 26, Herold and Booth were found hiding in a barn near Port Royal, Virginia. Herold surrendered but Booth refused to come out of the barn so it was set on fire. In the ensuing chaos, a soldier shot and killed Booth. Thats the end of the John Wilkes Booth who shot Lincoln.

The nemesis of assassinations followed Lincoln's son Robert Todd Lincoln. Junior Lincoln arrived too late to stop three seperate presidential assassinations.He met his father, President Abraham Lincoln, at the theatre after John Wilkes Booth had shot and killed Lincoln. He went to a Washington train station to meet President Garfeild, arriving only minutes after he was shot. And, he traveled to Buffalo, New York to meet President Mckinley, but got there after the fatal shot had already been fired.
